Stair Nosing applications in public transport installations – This also covers the Stair Nosings sold to the transport industry sector. There are two regulations that are relevant:

• The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations 1998
• 2 . The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000

The Quantum Flooring Accessories Stair Nosings that meet the Building Regulation and British Standard guidelines contained within the Equality Act 2010 will in the main also satisfy the requirements of these two regulations. The exception being any Stair Nosing with a tread width over 50 mm (see text below).

The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations 1998

Section 6 (1)

Steps

“6 (1) Steps for use by passengers at any external doorway of a regulated rail vehicle shall comply with the following requirements—

(a)the surface of each tread shall be covered in slip-resistant material;

(b)across the front edge of each tread there shall be a band of colour which shall be not less than 45 millimetres and not more than 50 millimetres deep and shall contrast with the remainder of the tread;

The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations 2000

Section 4 (1)

Steps

“4 (1) Steps for use by passengers on a regulated public service vehicle shall (subject to sub-paragraph (6)) comply with the following requirements—

(a)the surface of each tread shall be covered in a slip-resistant material;

(b)step nosings shall be designed to minimise the risk of tripping;

(c)across the front edge of each tread there shall be a band of colour not less than 45mm and not more than 50mm in width, which shall contrast with the remainder of the tread;”
