Clapham Picturehouse Cinema, located in the heart of Clapham, has become a beloved cultural hub since opening in the 1990s as part of the Picturehouse chain. Housed in a former 1920s theatre building, it blends historic charm with a modern, community-focused atmosphere. Over the years, it has developed a strong local following, serving not just as a place to watch films but also as a social space, complete with a popular bar and café. Its commitment to fostering film culture and hosting community events has made it a longstanding fixture in Clapham’s artistic and social life.

Challenge
Clapham Picturehouse is a popular multi-screen cinema attracting large numbers of visitors throughout the day and evening. The venue required an upgrade to its stair nosings to improve safety, visibility and durability across both public staircases and the internal steps within the screens.
Key challenges included:
Ensuring clear step-edge visibility in low-light auditoriums
Providing improved slip resistance for high pedestrian traffic
Maintaining consistency across different areas of the building
Achieving a visually sympathetic finish that works with the cinema’s design
Completing the project within a tight turnaround, keeping disruption to a minimum
With carpeted stairs throughout the venue, a profile suitable for textile floorcoverings was essential.
Solution
CAPS Ltd selected Quantum Flooring Accessories aluminium stair nosings to provide a reliable, compliant and attractive finish.
HF2 was installed on the public staircases. Its robust construction makes it ideal for heavy footfall areas, and the Polar Grey insert ensures strong Light Reflectance Value (LRV) contrast against the carpet.
HF1 was chosen for the internal steps inside the cinema screens. This profile provides discreet but highly effective edge definition, critical in darkened auditorium conditions.
The Polar Grey insert was used throughout the project to maintain both visual consistency and step-edge clarity. The profiles were fitted over carpeted treads, giving a clean, defined and safe finish.
Thanks to the quick delivery of HF1 and HF2, CAPS were able to meet the cinema’s compressed schedule, ensuring the venue remained operational with minimal downtime.
