Following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, the UK government implemented more stringent fire safety measures to protect residents in multi-storey housing. This prompted local authorities like Barnet Council to re-evaluate and upgrade the fire safety features in their social housing stock.
A recent refurbishment project in an 18 metre high social housing building provided an opportunity to align with the updated Part B Building Regulations, which emphasise improved fire safety and clear escape routes.
Challenge
The building, which accommodates numerous residents, needed fire safety enhancements to ensure that stairways would be clearly visible and accessible during emergency evacuations.
Under the revised Part B Building Regulations, there is a requirement for safer escape routes, especially in high residential buildings. This includes the need for clearly defined stair nosings to aid visibility and prevent trips or falls during evacuation. Given the heightened safety standards post-Grenfell, Barnet Council are committed to adopting solutions that exceed basic compliance and offer residents added protection.
