LRV Stair Nosings

Every colour has a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) between 0 (Pure Black) and 100 (Pure white). There should be at least 30 points difference between the Stair Nosing LRV and the floorcovering LRV, e.g. If the floorcovering has a LRV of 50, then the Stair Nosing should have a LRV of between 0–20 or 80–100. This creates a ‘ladder effect’ which helps the partially sighted when ascending or descending stairs. The Quantum Flooring range of tread and channels have LRVs, ranging from 5 to 81.

When can I reduce the LRV points to 20 rather than 30 on a staircase?

You can reduce the LRV if there is a very well lit (minimum 200 lux) stairway you maybe be able to use a stair nosing with only 20 points of difference. However, we would suggest to be safe you always aim to have 30 points of difference.

LRV Flooring Transitions 

LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value; every colour has one. Pure black being 0 and pure white being 100. If you are designing for aged care or with dementia in mind,  flooring transitions, needs to have no more than 10 points of difference between the base colour of the floor covering and the flooring transition. For example if you have a dark grey carpet with a LRV of 16 then the flooring transition must have a LRV of 6 to 26.
