Fire Performance of Aluminium and PVC-u Stair Nosings and Flooring Accessories
Quantum Flooring Accessories does not provide a specific or blanket fire classification for its aluminium or PVC-u stair nosings and flooring accessories when considered as installed products. This is because stair nosings and flooring accessories are installed in a wide variety of configurations and site conditions over which the manufacturer has no control. The overall fire performance of an installed flooring or stair system may be influenced by a number of factors, including the substrate, floorcovering, adhesive, fixing method and the materials surrounding the accessory. BS EN 13501-1 provides procedures for the classification of the reaction to fire performance of construction products, including floorings. However, the classification of an individual component under specified test conditions does not, in itself, establish the fire performance of the complete installed flooring or stair system.
PVC and PVC-u
The PVC and PVC-u materials used in Quantum Flooring Accessories have inherent fire-performance characteristics. Unplasticised PVC (PVC-u) is inherently difficult to ignite and is self-extinguishing when the external heat source is removed. PVC also tends to carbonise when exposed to heat, forming a char layer which can help to inhibit further flame propagation.
Aluminium
Aluminium stair nosing carriers are manufactured from aluminium alloy. Aluminium is a non-combustible metal and has a melting point of approximately 660°C. Based on the inherent characteristics of aluminium, the aluminium carrier itself does not provide a combustible fuel source in the same manner as organic materials.
Product-Specific Fire Testing
Certain Quantum stair nosing tread materials have been subject to specific fire-performance testing.
- Plus-Tread has been tested to achieve Class Bfl-s1 in accordance with EN 13501-1.
- EcoGlo achieves Class 2 surface spread of flame in accordance with BS 476 Part 7:1997.
These results relate to the specific materials and test conditions stated and should not be interpreted as a fire classification for the complete installed stair nosing, flooring accessory or flooring/stair system.
Product Warranty
Due to the variable nature of site conditions and the fact that flooring accessories are installed in conjunction with other materials, including adhesives, substrates and floorcoverings, Quantum Flooring Accessories cannot provide a blanket warranty covering the performance of an installation irrespective of the conditions of use. Quantum Flooring Accessories warrants that its products leaving its manufacturing facility in Oldham, Lancashire are fit for their intended purpose, provided that they are:
- stored and handled appropriately;
- installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations;
- used in an appropriate application; and
- installed under conditions suitable for the product and its intended use.
The warranty applies to the products supplied by Quantum Flooring Accessories and does not extend to the performance of an installation where that performance is affected by materials, workmanship, installation methods or site conditions outside the manufacturer’s control.
Project-specific product warranties or additional technical assurances may be available where the relevant products, application and installation conditions have been clearly defined and agreed in advance.
