What do BREEAM and LEED ratings entail? BREEAM, short for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology, was initially introduced by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990. It stands as the world’s oldest method for evaluating, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) mirrors BREEAM’s principles in the United States. Originating in 1994, LEED has evolved from a single standard for new construction to a comprehensive suite of interconnected standards that encompass aspects ranging from initial design and construction to ongoing maintenance and operation. It has since become one of the most widely adopted green building certification programs globally. Despite its worldwide popularity, an article in the Architects’ Journal (28/02/2013) notes that the LEED system reigns supreme everywhere except in the UK.
Both BREEAM and LEED share a common goal: to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable practices in both new construction and renovation projects.
According to the BRE, stair nosings and flooring accessories do not contribute to gaining credits under the Green Guide Specification, as they do not directly impact any of the categories within the BREEAM Scheme.
