Yes, Qwood can be painted. Qwood timber composite profiles are supplied in their natural colour and are designed to accept a painted finish. The highly smooth and consistent surface of Qwood provides an excellent base for achieving a high-quality finish on timber windows and doors.

Qwood can be painted for both internal and external applications. Unlike traditional timber beads, Qwood is supplied ready to use, with no need for moisture extraction, acclimatisation or pre-treatment before machining and finishing.

For the best results, always use a suitable tested coating system and follow the paint manufacturer’s preparation, application and drying instructions.

Important: Translucent sealers and lacquer finishes should not be used on Qwood.

Can Qwood be painted?

Yes. Qwood is specifically designed to be painted.

Qwood profiles are supplied in their natural colour, which reflects the wood flour used in their manufacture. The smooth, consistent surface creates an excellent base for paint and helps achieve a high-quality, uniform finish.

Qwood can be used for painted:

Qwood can be worked in the same way as traditional timber, including cutting, mitring, pinning, nailing, gluing and shaping.

Do I need to prepare Qwood before painting?

One of the advantages of Qwood is that it is supplied ready to use.

Unlike traditional timber, Qwood does not need to be extracted for moisture, acclimatised or conditioned before use. Its consistent manufactured surface also reduces the preparation typically associated with timber profiles.

However, the surface should always be clean, dry and free from contamination before applying a coating system.

The exact preparation requirements will depend on the coating manufacturer and the specific paint system being used.

What paint should I use on Qwood?

Qwood has been tested with finishes from leading paint manufacturers. There are currently nine available test reports covering different coating systems.

For a specific paint or coating system, we recommend checking the relevant Qwood test report and following the coating manufacturer’s technical instructions.

Do not assume that every paint, primer, lacquer or coating will be suitable simply because it is suitable for timber.

If you are unsure whether a particular coating system is suitable for Qwood, contact the Qwood technical team before starting production.

Does Qwood need a primer?

The requirement for primer depends on the coating system being used.

For standard finishes, follow the paint manufacturer’s specification for Qwood and use the primer and topcoat system recommended for the application.

For dark-coloured external finishes, Qwood recommends particular consideration of the primer colour. A white primer beneath a dark topcoat can help reduce heat absorption.

The lighter base layer reflects more solar energy and can help reduce peak temperatures and thermal stress within the finished joinery.

How do I paint Qwood? — Step by step

1. Cut and prepare the Qwood profile

Qwood can be cut, mitred and shaped using traditional joinery tools.

Because Qwood is supplied ready to use, there is no requirement to acclimatise the material in the same way as traditional timber.

2. Make sure the surface is clean

Before applying the coating system, ensure the Qwood profile is clean, dry and free from dust, grease or other contamination.

Follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation instructions.

3. Apply the recommended primer

Where the selected coating system requires a primer, apply the recommended primer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

For dark external colours, Qwood recommends considering a white primer beneath the dark topcoat to help reduce solar heat absorption.

4. Apply the topcoat

Apply the recommended topcoat using the application method and number of coats specified by the coating manufacturer.

Allow the coating to dry or cure fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions before handling, assembling or installing the finished component.

5. Inspect the finished profile

Check the finished Qwood profile for complete and consistent coverage before it is installed into the window or door.

The smooth and consistent surface of Qwood is designed to provide an excellent base for a high-quality painted finish.

Can Qwood be painted black or another dark colour?

Yes, Qwood can be painted dark colours. However, dark colours require additional consideration when Qwood is used externally.

Dark colours absorb more solar energy than light colours and can therefore result in higher surface temperatures. This is particularly relevant to colours with a low Light Reflectance Value (LRV), including blacks, anthracites and very dark greys and greens.

For Qwood installations using dark colours with an LRV below 15, Qwood recommends:

  1. Securely fixing the beads at key points, including rail junctions, mitre joints, corners and other vulnerable areas.
  2. Using full-length clips wherever possible for clip-on drip beads and glazing beads.
  3. Using a white primer beneath dark topcoats to help reduce heat absorption.
  4. Not using translucent sealers or lacquer finishes on Qwood.

Correct installation and restraint are particularly important for highly exposed external joinery.

Can I use lacquer or a translucent finish on Qwood?

No. Translucent coatings and lacquer finishes should not be used on Qwood.

Qwood should be finished using a suitable opaque coating system that has been tested or confirmed as suitable for the application.

If you are considering a coating system that is not covered by the available Qwood test reports, contact the Qwood technical team for advice.

Can Qwood be painted before installation?

Yes. Qwood profiles can be painted as part of the joinery manufacturing process.

One of the advantages of Qwood is that the profiles can be machined and finished as part of a normal joinery production process without the preparation and conditioning typically associated with timber beads.

For production environments, always follow the coating manufacturer’s recommendations for application, drying, handling and storage.

Is Qwood suitable for external painted applications?

Yes. Qwood profiles are suitable for both internal and external applications.

Qwood has been developed as a stable alternative to traditional timber components used in windows and doors. Its dimensional stability helps reduce many of the movement issues associated with traditional timber.

However, as with any external building product, colour, solar exposure, installation and restraint all need to be considered.

This is particularly important when using very dark colours in highly exposed locations.

Why does Qwood provide a good surface for painting?

Qwood has a smooth, consistent manufactured surface without the natural imperfections found in timber.

Traditional timber can contain knots, grain variations and other imperfections that may require additional preparation before finishing.

Qwood provides a consistent surface that can be machined and painted while maintaining the appearance expected from a high-quality timber window or door.

The finished profile can therefore provide the appearance of a traditional timber component while benefiting from the stability and consistency of a composite material.
