Quantum Flooring Solutions serves up a quality measure

Caffé Nero – Lower Precinct, Coventry

The Challenge

Caffé Nero has more than 825 coffee houses around the world and has won many awards for both its coffee making and its service. Its unique, elevated café in Coventry’s Lower Precinct shopping centre is known as The Rotunda.

Caffé Nero employed Newdigate Builders for work on The Rotunda. The owner of Newdigate Builder Bedworth, Chris Coventry, has run his own business for over 30 years and has also worked for the local authorities for over 20 years. When the company were hired for work on the building, part of their remit involved fitting stair nosings on the staircase which leads up to the coffee house. The stair nosings would have to be hardwearing and have good slip-resistance to minimise the risk of slips and falls. There would have to be an LRV difference of 30 points between the stair nosings and the concrete steps, so that each step could be clearly identified.

The Solution

Newdigate Builder Bedworth contacted Quantum Flooring Solutions and requested the free QSMS measuring service. Within 24 hours, a surveyor had visited the site and electronically measured all of the steps. The information on the measure was automatically relayed to Quantum Flooring Solutions. It was also sent electronically to Newdigate Builders and to Capitol Flooring, a local distributor. Newdigate Builders opted to use Quantum’s SF225R Stair Nosing profile, with yellow tread. This S-Range Slenderline profile is designed specifically for use on steps with slim or no floorcovering. Its double channel tread minimises the risk of slips and falls, while the ramped back reduces trip hazards.

The Outcome

Capitol Flooring cut Quantum’s Stair Nosings to the correct size for each of the steps, in accordance with the precise measurements from the QSMS measuring service. The step lengths were numbered from the top step to the bottom. This ensured that Quantum’s Stair Nosings could be fitted quickly and easily. The SF225R profile, with its flat fronted risers, fitted perfectly onto the 90ᵒ concrete steps, while the double tread ensured a large surface area of grip for the step noses. The bright yellow tread colouring has more than 30 LRV points difference from the steps, making the stair nosings easy to distinguish and helping to meet Building Regulations guidelines.

Newdigate Builder Bedworthknew that Quantum’s Stair Nosings were just what was needed for the job. Caffé Nero can rest assured that it has enhanced the safety of the customers who visit The Rotunda.
