Quantum Flooring Solutions is a hard act to follow at the Aldwych Theatre in London
Bespoke stair nosings have been fitted on the stairs in the Theatre that accommodate the gauge of the extra thick carpet laid in the foyer and on the stairs throughout the public areas of the building.

The Problem
This busy and popular theatre, located in the heart of London’s West End, planned a full refurbishment programme prior to Christmas that required the building to be closed to the public. Time was short, since a scheduled production was due to open on a fixed date. This could not be missed.

Whilst other trades had time from the commencement of the closure, the flooring work needed to be completed within 15 days. It had to be right on the night!

The Requirement
The Aldwych Theatre worked with CAPS Ltd, a flooring contractor based in Maidstone in Kent. CAPS specialise in cinema and theatre installations, having the Multiplex, Odeon and Ambassador companies amongst their key clients.

Knowing that time was tight, CAPS called Quantum Flooring Solutions. They knew that the QSMS (specialist measuring service) could provide quick, efficient and accurate details of the stair nosings needed. These to match the gauge of the heavy-duty Axminster and Wilton carpets being fitted on the stairs in the theatre. There were also 40 curved steps to be templated – both ‘hockey stick’ and ‘continuous’ in format. To complete the measures, the fabrication of the curves, the delivery to site and final installation within 15 days was a challenge. The completion deadline could not be missed otherwise the stairs would not meet Health and Safety requirements and the theatre would not be able to open.

The Solution
Quantum Flooring Solutions completed the step measurements using the proven QSMS digital measuring system. Accurate details were with CAPS within 24 hours. The curve templates were also taken and sent to the factory for fabrication at the same time.
CAPS ordered the stair nosings from their Distributor Kent Flooring Supplies. The stair nosing used was a bespoke double channel profile developed specifically by Quantum Flooring Solutions with CAPS for use with heavy duty carpets. CAPS installs this profile on all the cinema and theatre projects. It’s a profile just right for the job!

The Conclusion
The stair nosings, cut to size and numbered by step, were delivered to CAPS. The fabricated curves arrived ahead of schedule, and fitting was completed without panic. The stair nosing tread colour chosen was white. This helped create a positive contrast with the stair carpets, providing a clear identification of each step.
